The tagline for my website is Keeping Grandma Alive….and all the others, too (including yourself). I include current generations in this because our life stories are family history in the making.
I write down the stories that I know and have learned about my ancestors because I don’t want these precious people to become just names and dates on a piece of paper.
But I don’t want to become just names and dates on a piece of paper either, which is why I took a life story writing class a few years ago.
This class used a method called Guided AutoBiography (GAB, for short). The GAB method is a semi-structured way to write about our lives. It uses a series of life themes – like major branching points in life or the role of money – to get the mind remembering stories and deciding what to write about.
The stories are short, about 2 pages each. And unlike writing a memoir that covers a life from beginning to end, these stories are snippets or vignettes from a person’s life…the memorable points of life, be they high points or low ones. A Family Story: How My Mom Became My Hero was written in the GAB class I took.
I enjoyed the class so much that I became a certified GAB instructor so that I could help others write stories about their lives because I don’t want anyone to become just names and dates.
I’m excited to announce that in June I am offering my first live, on-line, life story writing class; and I would love to have you join in.
The class meetings are weekly, starting June 16th, and they take place on Zoom. Each class meeting in this 5-week session lasts about two hours. This 5-week pilot class session is only $47.
Here is a link to the information page about my classes. Please go there to learn more or to contact me with any questions.
Thanks for reading to the end, and I hope to see you in class.
