This week’s prompt for 52 Ancestors in 52 Weeks is Favorite Photo.
The photo below always makes me smile because of the look on the boys’ faces. The smiling one on the left, Carlisle, was not known for being a cheerful person, yet he’s smiling with delight here. The one of the right, Chet, was a happier person but he doesn’t look especially happy in this photo. I often wonder what was going on that we can’t see in the picture.

Carlisle Entzminger MARTIN (1915-1977) and Chester Arthur “Chet” MARTIN, Sr. (1917-1973) were my mother’s older brothers. They look to be about 7 and 9 or 8 and 10 in this photo. That would date it 1924-1925. It was likely taken in Frederick County, Virginia or Howard County, Maryland.
I say it was taken on a Sunday afternoon because both of the boys have on white shirts and ties which they likely only wore for church. And the fact that one is smiling makes me think it wasn’t a solemn affair they were coming from.

Wading in the creek in your Sunday best? Growing up in the 60’s that was a no-no, let alone in this era. It’s great to conjecture though.
An adult would have had to take the photo- so who knows?
We will never know unfortunately. All involved have passed away, but it’s fun to imagine! Thanks for commenting. Geoff.
With Carlisle smiling, and Dad not, I reckon Carlise had just pulled a prank, and Dad was the target~!
Amazing that they both got to grow up~
Thanks
You’re probably right about that They certainly had a love-hate relationship.
